Generally if a costume is needed for a specific time period or event in history, the producers with opt for somebody with a major in that particular branch of history. For example: If a costume is needed for a film based in England during the Victorian Era, the producer will use somebody with a major in English history to give an idea to the costume designers. You could always get a major in costume design for musical theater though, if you're looking for a history-design type job.
