I'm stuck on how to start my essay off. Here are the questions Part A – Examine the following case study of a fictional murder. Using psychological profiling, draw some conclusions as to who would possible suspects for the murder, based on the physical evidence and the crime scene. (500-750 words) Part B – Critically evaluate the process of offender profiling in this instance by comparing it to research carried out by psychologists within this field, focussing on research methods. (500-750 words) Part C – Evaluate the relevance and the contribution that forensic psychology has made in the area of serious crime, ensuring that it is relevant to the case study. (500-750 words) Case Study Victim Background Mr X was a 38 year old divorcee. He has two children from his previous marriage, who now live with Mr X’s ex-wife and her new partner. The children do visit Mr X every other weekend, arriving on Friday night, and returning to their mother’s home Sunday evening. Mr X has been accountant since leaving University; he has worked for a small company for the last 15 years. Mr X had 2 siblings, one brother who is a plumber, married with no children and a sister who co-habits with her partner. She works as a nurse at a local hospital. Since his divorce, Mr X has had a relatively busy social life, visiting local bars and nightclubs. He has had a series of short-term relationships. He was single at the time of his death. Crime Scene The body of Mr X was found in the living room face up lying northwards, near the top right-hand corner of the room. There were signs of a break-in. The large window in the living room (North-West) was broken, with broken glass on the inside of the window. The TV was moved out of position (TV stand remaining), face down near the window. There is evidence that a DVD player and Sky box top were missing (extra wires and speakers, and Sky dish) An empty jewellery box was found on the living room floor. There was also evidence of a missing stereo (dust pattern on cabinet would be consistent with this) There was evidence of smashed ornaments and photographs on the floor. Also an empty laptop case was found but no laptop has yet been found. Other rooms in the house There were signs that attempts have been made to force open the back door, but these attempts were unsuccessful. From the outside, the smashed window of the living room faces on to a grassy area, and is camouflaged by high bushes, so is not clearly visible from the street. Mr X The body was face up lying to the North. There are signs of a wound to the left temple that was a fatal blow. There are signs of bruising to the face that occurred before death. There are defensive wounds to the hands and arms, as well as evidence of hair and skin under the nails. There are bruises on the torso and legs that occurred post mortem. The time of death was approximately 2.00pm. Witness Statement A neighbour heard shouting at around, or just before 2pm. The neighbour intimated that the victim usually did not arrive home until 5.30pm. The neighbour did state that she had heard some noise, banging and shouting. She thought nothing of it as his divorce was not amicable, and both parties were aggrieved. The ex-wife claimed that she did not receive enough maintenance, but the victim still felt bitter about his ex-wife’s indiscretion and her eventual departure from the home with their two children. The arguments between the two did still occur, usually at the weekend when the children stayed with their father. The employer of Mr X stated that Mr X left work at 1.30pm complaining of a headache, and that he was going home. The employer and colleagues confirmed that Mr X was still suffering from personal and legal issues with his ex-wife, concerning finances and the ownership of the family home

Sounds like a simple burglary in progress interrupted by the victim's coming home unexpectedly. The victim put up somewhat of a struggle. Depending on his size (not given) this might give clues to the physicality of the perpetrator. The ex is irrelevant. Doesn't fit with the scenario of broken glass, attempting to leave by door that doesn't work, etc. Look for locals or those who have been "hanging around" the area -- casing the joint -- they figured he wouln't be home, but knew it was worth burglarizing.

The victim's ex-wife and new partner are definitely suspects, since the victim left his place of work at 1:30 "complaining of a headache" it is probable that he was using this as a last minute excuse to meet someone at his house. The fact that the victim died approximately 30 minutes after leaving his place of work shows that he also could have walked into someone breaking into his home, but 2:00 pm is a very strange time for a burglary and since he was found "face up with wounds that were post-mortem bruises on his legs and torso" this isn't consistent with a simple burglary. The time here is a key issue, what are the chances that a person would have a headache and leave work and walk into a random intruder burglarizing his house? Someone may have known what time he worked and entered the house hoping to get something in particular, the neighborhood should be canvased immediately because it would be hard to imagine no one seeing a person making off with all of those valuable in broad daylight. The other most likely scenario, in my opinion, is that as I mentioned previously, the victim was going to meet someone that he knew at his home and since the divorce was not amicable it was most likely his ex-wife (with or without her new partner). She may have set up a meeting time with the victim with the intention of killing him and making it appear to have been a botched burglary. Since the large window in the living room had broken glass on the inside of the window if it was used as a point of entry (which sounds improbable) then there would probably be blood or some clothing fragments on the glass inside the window. It's more likely that the perpetrator entered a different way, probably let in through one of the doors by the victim. The window was probably used to get the stuff out of the house without being seen. Don't ignore the damage to the back door though, this could have been made after the fact to make it look more like an actual burglary and not an "inside job." Since the victim had hair and skin under his nails DNA should make this a pretty easy case, the DNA could be checked against his own to see if it belongs to someone related to him. The victim's brother and sister should definitely be interviewed as well, it could have been Mr.X's brother in the living room with the plumber's wrench. "After thorough examination of the facts of the case I have come to the conclusion (first person is acceptable I guess?) that the attacker/robber was probably known to the victim. The victim's ex-wife and new partner are the prime suspects as the "divorce wasn't amicable" and "both parties were aggrieved," furthermore there were legal difficulties concerning finances and the ownership of the home."

His ex wife and his bf kill MR X . WHy ? Because she was not happy about his life style and the way he was treating her ; so she call him at work [ I don't buy the theory of the head ache for leaving his work ] and ask him if they could meet around 2 PM and he agreed thinking that it would help them sort things out ; especially for the sake of their children . The broken window had been stage just like the stolen material . The pictures who had been destroy show ; how the aggressor. was mad at him [ who else would bother with pictures ] also the multiplies wounds who were not fatal shows ; the rage of the murderer [ she want him to suffer before he died ] and the fatal blow had been done by the bf [ Its take a good strenght to administer a fatal blow ] About the defencive wounds shows how he fight for his life . About the back door ;; 2 possibilities ; first ; they were [ the murderers were quite nervous and try to escape by the back door or its another stage , The fact he is lying on his back facing north is irrelevant in the case ; he just died in this position
