I just bought a $650 jewelry armoire for $50!! It was a great buy but needs repair it has a continuos hinge on the top where it opens with a mirror and ring compartment, well the back of the armoire where the hinge was attached is broken, I guess it was a display item and was moved around alot and the hinge came completely off, so the screws came through the back and the wood is cracked and open thru....I was thinking of using wood filler/apoxy or something of that nature to fill in those gaps and re-screw it back in. ??? Which is the best wood filler/apoxy to use when re-drilling or screwing this piece back in, need something something with lots of strength as the door has a mirror and its actually a pretty big door on the top maybe 20in by 20inch (approximate)??? OR ??? Should i put a long piece of wood for more stability then fill in the holes??? There is just so many different products out there & dont know what to use or how to repair, seems like an easy fix so I just want to do this once :) hopefully - Thank you
Glue the cracked piece with carpenters glue. Clamp it carefully and leave it dry for the alloted time. Take some scrap wood and a sharp knife. Carve out some pegs small enough to fit tightly into the screw holes that stripped out and longer than the screw holes are deep. Coat the pegs with carpenters glue and tap them into the old screw holes. When the glue is dry carefully cut the pegs off flush. Drill small (SMALLER THAN THE SCREWS WIDTH) pilot holes for the screws to start in when you put the hinge back on. Use a wood filler or some such product to touch up any areas that need it.
wood filler , let it set hard then use original screws , job done !
a titebond II woodglue will fix the cracks. i would change the hinges to a type that will incorporate more of the back side and possibly preventing any re-cracking...
